Roots: from philosophy to psychology

Psychology is a young science with a very old past. For more than two thousand years before the first laboratory, the questions of this whole site, what is mind? why do people suffer? how do they heal?, belonged to philosophers, physicians, and priests, in Asia as much as in Greece.

What is psychology?

CTEVT PSC curriculum

Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour: of what people think, feel, and do, and why. Its four classic goals: describe behaviour, explain it, predict it, and help change it. It earns the word "scientific" by testing claims with evidence, observation, surveys, case studies, and experiments, rather than by authority or tradition.

Era & thinkersThe ideaWhy it still matters to a counselor
Ancient healing traditionsDistress caused by spirits, gods, karma, or imbalance; treated by ritual, trepanation, exorcismThis worldview is not "the past": it is the first explanation many Nepali clients still receive
Hindu & Buddhist psychology (Upanishads from ~800 BCE; Abhidhamma from ~300 BCE)Systematic maps of mind (man, buddhi, chitta, ahamkara); suffering (dukkha) arises from craving and can be worked with through awareness and disciplineMindfulness-based therapies descend from this line; the Nepali "man" (heart-mind) you counsel through is part of it
Ayurveda & Greek humoral medicine (Hippocrates, ~400 BCE; Charaka, ~100 BCE–200 CE)Mental illness as bodily imbalance, three dosha (vata, pitta, kapha) or four humours, not divine punishmentThe first naturalistic theory of mental illness: disorder as illness, not sin
Greek philosophy; Socrates, Plato, AristotleReason examines the self ("know thyself"); Plato: mind separate from body; Aristotle: soul as the form of the body, memory and associationThe talking cure begins here: the belief that examining one's own thoughts can change one's life
Stoics (Epictetus, ~100 CE)"People are disturbed not by things, but by the views they take of them"Quoted almost word-for-word as the founding idea of CBT
Descartes (1600s)Mind-body dualism; the body as machineGave us the mind/body split that conversion disorder and psychosomatic medicine have been repairing ever since
Empiricists: Locke, Hume (1600s–1700s)Mind as blank slate (tabula rasa); knowledge from experience and associationThe seed of behaviourism and of learning-based therapy: what was learned can be relearned
Moral treatment; Pinel, Tuke (1790s)Unchaining asylum patients; illness treated with dignity and routineThe direct ancestor of psychosocial care, and of the fight against chaining that Nepal still fights

Psychology becomes a science: the schools

1879 →

In 1879 Wilhelm Wundt opened the first psychology laboratory in Leipzig, Germany: the conventional birthday of scientific psychology. The schools that followed each kept one piece of the truth, and each gave counselling one of its tools:

The thread to hold: every school survives inside your practice. When you normalise a body reaction, you are a biologist; when you trace a thought, a cognitivist; when you set an exposure ladder, a behaviourist; when you listen without judgment, a humanist; when you ask what the family and the village believe, you are doing what no laboratory can, and that is the psychosocial part.

Key points
  1. Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour; it began as philosophy and became a science in Wundt's lab in 1879.
  2. Asia's traditions (Ayurveda, Upanishads, Buddhist psychology) named the mind and its suffering long before Europe did.
  3. Each school (psychoanalysis, behaviourism, humanistic, cognitive) left a tool you still use in counselling today.
