Moving forward: the change skills

Once a client feels heard (page 19), four skills help them move: generating options, seeing a contradiction, getting the facts, and understanding their own body and mind. Each card gives what to do, what to say, and the mistakes new counselors make. The situations are short, fictional, and different on each card.

1 · Brainstorming: many options before any judgement

CTEVT PSC curriculum

Counselor and client together make the longest possible list of ways through a problem, then choose. Four rules, explained to the client first: no judgement while listing; free thinking, odd and small ideas count; quantity over quality, five or six; combine and improve.

  1. State the problem in one clear sentence.
  2. List options, pen and paper out, no criticism; the client leads.
  3. Weigh pros and cons, then choose the most practical first step.

Say: "Come, let us list together everything that might help." · "Right now we are not sorting right from wrong; whatever comes to mind goes on the paper." · "What could be the first small step? Say it, whatever it is."

Client: "I feel very alone here." Counselor: "Let us brainstorm; no judging yet, only listing. What comes first?" Client: "A college club?" Counselor: "On the list. I will add one: a twenty-minute evening walk. What else?" Client: "Calling old friends twice a week." Counselor: "Three. Two more, then we pick the first to try."

What goes wrong:

  • Immediate criticism: "A walk? How will that cure loneliness?" The client stops thinking.
  • The expert trap: "Here are my five ideas: first…" Direction breeds dependence.
  • No filtering: a long list and no chosen first step.

2 · Challenge: holding up a gentle mirror

CTEVT PSC curriculum

The most delicate skill and one of the most powerful. Challenge (the curriculum also says confrontation) is never proving the client wrong; it is placing a mismatch in front of them, respectfully, so they can see it. Three mismatches: words against actions ("I want to top the class", then a day on the phone); words against feelings ("I am fine", eyes full of tears); one statement against another. It needs strong rapport; too early, it frightens the client away.

  1. Acknowledge the good in what they said.
  2. Name both sides: "On one hand…, on the other hand…", softly.
  3. Hand it back: "How do you see these two together?"

Say: "On one hand you say…, but on the other hand in what you do…" · "I feel a little puzzled: earlier you said…, and now…" · "You smile and say you are fine, yet your eyes look sad. How do these two fit?"

Client (who earlier admitted five or six hours a day on social media): "I have to get a good GPA this semester. Study is everything to me." Counselor: "That commitment is real. I notice one small mismatch: on one hand you want a good result more than anything, on the other hand five or six hours a day go to social media. How do those two sit together?" Client (after a pause): "You are right. I keep saying I will study, and the time keeps going."

What goes wrong:

  • Accusing: "You are lying to yourself! Facebook all day and you expect marks?" An attack closes the door.
  • Hard tone: any hint of "I will fix you" turns the mirror into a weapon.
  • Too early: safety first, mirror later.

3 · Information giving: facts that open doors

CTEVT PSC curriculum

Giving the client the facts, procedures and resources they need to decide for themselves, and pointing to the right place when a referral is needed. Information offers choices; advice takes them away.

  1. Check that it is accurate and from a real source.
  2. Give only what is needed now, in plain words.
  3. Ask what they made of it, and whether they want the next step.

Say: "There are a few options and resources for this I can tell you about…" · "As far as I know, the process is…" · "Some colleges have support for students in this situation. Would you like to know how it works?"

Client: "Rent and fees have come due at once. I cannot ask my parents. I am close to leaving college." Counselor: "Before deciding, one piece of information: the college has a fund for students from outside the valley that covers part of the fees, and part-time posts in the library. Would you like to know how to apply?"

What goes wrong:

  • Advice in disguise: "Do not even think of leaving. Go to the office now, fill the form."
  • Misinformation: "I think the college teaches everyone for free." If you do not know, say so and find out.
  • Overload: ten organisations and phone numbers to someone already overwhelmed.

4 · Psychoeducation: "what is happening to me, and why"

CTEVT PSC curriculum

Close to information giving, but about the mind and body themselves. When a client is frightened by their own symptoms, you explain in simple, honest words what is happening and why. Three aims: normalise (a healthy body reacting to stress, not madness), reduce stigma, and hand over a first self-management skill such as slow breathing. The fight-or-flight map on section 03, drawn on paper, is the classic tool.

  1. Ask permission: "May I explain a little of what the body does under stress?"
  2. Explain with a daily-life picture, not textbook words.
  3. Check: "How does that sound?" and leave room for questions.

Say: "Under heavy stress the body and brain work in a particular way. May I tell you a little about it?" · "Once the doctor has checked the heart, a racing heart in anxiety is not a disease of the body; it is…" · "The brain has a kind of alarm bell; when it senses danger…"

Client: "Before a presentation my heart pounds so hard I feel I am having a heart attack. Am I going mad?" Counselor: "First, new or strong chest symptoms always deserve a doctor's check, and yours came back clear. So this is not a disease of the body, and you are not going mad. When the brain reads a situation as a big threat, the body switches on fight-or-flight: adrenaline, a faster heart, shaking hands, sweat. A healthy body getting ready for danger. Once we learn a way to calm it, it settles. How does that sound?"

What goes wrong:

  • Lecturing in jargon: "Your sympathetic nervous system is activated." They feel smaller, not wiser.
  • Labeling: "You have anxiety disorder" is a diagnosis as verdict, and not yours to give.
  • One-way talk: ten minutes of you, never asking "how much of this made sense?"
Practice drill

With a classmate: one plays a student who says "study is everything" but spends evenings on the phone. Run brainstorming first (five options, no judging), then one gentle challenge in the "on one hand, on the other" frame, then one piece of information. Swap roles. Which of the named mistakes did each of you make?

Key points
  1. Brainstorming has four rules the client hears first: no judging while listing, free thinking, quantity over quality, combine and improve; the client leads, and the session ends with one chosen first step.
  2. Challenge only after rapport, always in the "on one hand, on the other hand" frame, and handed back as a question; a hard tone turns the mirror into a weapon.
  3. Information gives options, advice takes them away; psychoeducation asks permission, explains in daily-life pictures, normalises, and hands over one first skill.
