Listening back: the reflecting skills

The table on page 18 names seventeen verbal skills. Five of them make a client feel heard, and they are worked in full here: what to do, what to say, and the mistakes new counselors make. One fictional student, a composite invented for teaching and not a client, runs through the first four cards so the skills can be seen building on each other: from a village, alone in a rented room in Kathmandu, grades low, parents in debt for the fees. The four skills that help a client move are on page 20; the other eight of the seventeen stay in the table.

1 · Paraphrasing: their content, your words

CTEVT PSC curriculum

Giving back the main content of what the client said, shorter and in your own plain words, so they hear: I listened, and I understood it the way you meant it.

  1. Listen for the key message.
  2. Translate it into your own clear, respectful words.
  3. Check, gently, whether you got it right.

Say: "So what you are saying is…" · "If I have understood you right, you…" · "From what I hear, your main worry is that…"

Student: "I have to give a presentation. I feel my friends laugh at my English. I think about it so much I cannot sleep." Counselor: "If I have understood you right, worrying about how they will take your English is making the presentation hard to prepare, and costing you sleep too, is that it?"

What goes wrong:

  • Parroting: their exact words back ("So… presentation, friends laugh, no sleep?").
  • Adding a guess: "Is it because your English is weak?" They never said that.
  • Advice: "Then practise in front of a mirror."
  • Feelings only: "You are very afraid of your friends" drops the content; that is the next skill.

2 · Reflection of feeling: the heart under the words

CTEVT PSC curriculum

Paraphrasing touches the head; this touches the heart. Name the feeling the client expressed or showed (fear, sadness, anger, helplessness, guilt), so they feel someone has felt it with them.

  1. Read more than the words: tone, face, tears held back.
  2. Name the feeling tentatively, not as a verdict.
  3. Check: "…is that how it is?"

Say: "Listening to you, it seems you are feeling quite…" · "This seems to have left you very…" · "From your voice there is a lot of… inside, is that so?"

Student (looking down, close to tears): "In the village I was always with friends. Here I come back to this room alone. Sometimes I want to cry." Counselor: "Living alone in this big city after that warmth, loneliness and missing home seem to be weighing on you, and under it a sadness, is that right?"

What goes wrong:

  • Minimising: "Crying over that? Everyone feels it at first in Kathmandu."
  • Labeling: "You are clearly in clinical depression." You reflect a feeling, not a diagnosis.
  • Sympathy, not empathy: "Oh, poor you." Pity stands above; empathy sits beside.
  • Chasing facts: "Which college? Which part of town?" Feelings first.

3 · Reflection of meaning: the "why" behind the feeling

CTEVT PSC curriculum

Head, heart, and now the person's values: what the event means to them, for their life and self-respect. When an event strikes a value or a hope, that is where the pain comes from.

  1. Listen for expectations, beliefs, values hidden in the story.
  2. Name the meaning, with words like "means", "matters", "in your eyes".
  3. Check whether it lands.

Say: "For you, the deeper meaning of this is…" · "It sounds as if this is what matters most in your life, and now…" · "This seems to have shaken your trust in yourself, is that so?"

Student: "My parents took a loan to send me to this expensive college, and my first GPA came out very low. When I picture their faces I cannot sleep." Counselor: "Their sacrifice and their trust in you weigh more than anything. So a low result means, in your eyes, letting them down, and that is what makes it unbearable, is that right?"

What goes wrong:

  • Imposing your values: "Grades are not everything!" For them, study may be their whole world.
  • Staying on the surface: "You feel sad and afraid." True, but the trust and sacrifice are missed.
  • Judging the value: "It is wrong to stress yourself so much over your parents."

4 · Summarising: gathering the threads

CTEVT PSC curriculum

Pulling the facts, feelings and meanings of a stretch of talk into one short, ordered summary. Three moments call for it: the start of a session, a turning point before a new topic or solutions, and the close.

  1. Pick the milestones only, two or three.
  2. Order them: first, second, third, and any decision taken.
  3. Hand it back: "Have I got it, or is something missing?"

Say: "To put what we have covered so far in short…" · "You have raised several important things; if I gather them…" · "…did I sum that up rightly, or is there something to add?"

Counselor (closing): "Three things came up today. First, the sadness of arriving from the village into this loneliness. Second, the worry that the low GPA has broken your parents' trust. Third, what the stress is doing to your sleep. And we decided you will try one college club this week. Have I got it right?" Student: "Yes. Hearing it like that, it feels lighter."

What goes wrong:

  • Overloading: "You came on Sunday, got off at Sundhara, looked for a room…" A list, not a summary.
  • Distorting: "…and you have depression, so you are thinking of going home." They never said that.
  • Skipping confirmation: rattling it off and standing up turns a shared summary into a speech.

5 · Repetition of key words: one word, held out५ · मुख्य शब्द दोहोर्‍याउने: एउटा शब्द, फर्काएर

CTEVT PSC curriculum

Echoing exactly one word the client leaned on (a feeling, a decision, a confusion), with a slight lift of question. It invites more without interrupting, and slows the talk so they can look at that word again.

  1. Catch the last word, or the heaviest one.
  2. Return it softly, one word only.
  3. Wait; the silence does the rest.

Say: "…finished?" · "…alone?" · "…confused?"

Client: "My scholarship did not come through. I cannot face asking my parents. I feel completely ruined." Counselor: "…ruined?" Client: "Yes, because if I cannot pay the fees my studies stop here, and there is nothing left but going back to the village."

What goes wrong:

  • Overuse: echoing every sentence ("College?" "Friend?" "Went home?") sounds like a robot.
  • Interrogative tone: "Ruined?? How, ruined? Tell me!" is a police question.
  • The wrong word: "bus" or "tea" instead of "fear", "pressure", "decision".
Practice drill

With a classmate, run the four-card thread (arrival, loneliness, the GPA, the loan) as one twenty-minute session: paraphrase, reflect feeling, reflect meaning, summarise. Record it and listen back for the named mistakes.

Key points
  1. Paraphrase returns the content, reflection of feeling the emotion, reflection of meaning the value underneath; each ends with a check question, never a verdict.
  2. A single word held out, softly, opens more than a question; a summary gathers two or three milestones at the start, a turning point, or the close, and always asks "have I got it?"
  3. Every reflecting skill has a named way of failing: parroting, adding a guess, giving advice, minimising, labeling, staying on the surface, overloading. Knowing the mistake by name is half of avoiding it.
