Communication skills: SOLER and the seventeenसंवाद-सीप: SOLER र सत्र सीप

99 of your 780 hours go here, more than any disorder gets, because skills, not knowledge, are what the client experiences. Non-verbal skills open the door; verbal skills do the work.

The non-verbal foundation

Before a single skill, the body is already speaking. Non-verbal presence does three jobs: it makes the room feel safe (a calm, receptive stance tells a nervous client that nothing here will be judged), it shows congruence (when your words and your posture agree, the client trusts both; when they disagree, the client believes the posture), and it co-regulates (a grounded posture, steady breathing and a gentle voice slowly settle an activated client, the way a calm adult settles a frightened child).

SOLER: Sit squarely facing the client · Open posture (no crossed arms) · Lean slightly toward them · Eye contact, natural and culturally tuned · Relax. Around it: affirming (nodding, humming "hmm"), silence (the hardest skill; waiting while the client finds words), and observation (posture, tears held back, hands, what is NOT said). Nepali tuning: sustained direct eye contact from a young counselor to an elder, or across gender, can read as disrespect; soften it; a client may talk most freely while looking away.

Beyond SOLER, four channels carry most of what a client reads in you. None of them needs a number attached; they need attention.

ChannelDoWatch out
Body and faceSmall, timed nods that say "go on"; a face that stays warm and matches the client's tone; let your posture follow theirs a little rather than sit like a statueThe flicker of shock, disgust or judgement on your face when trauma or a stigmatised act is disclosed; the client sees it before you feel it
VoiceWarm, unhurried; slow down and soften in the intense moments; let a pause stand, the client is working in itFilling every silence; speeding up when you are anxious; a bright cheerful tone over heavy material
SpaceAbout an arm's length or more, tuned to the person and the culture; sit at an angle or side by side, nothing between you: no desk, no file on your lapA desk between you turns the session into an interview; crowding a trauma survivor, or a woman meeting a male counselor, closes the door
TouchOnly if culturally safe and asked for. Warmth travels through voice, face and posture; those are enoughA hand on the shoulder can revive a trauma, blur the boundary, or offend across gender or caste; when in doubt, offer water instead
Practice drill: watch yourself

Record a ten-minute role-play, or ask a classmate to watch, and tick honestly:

  • Face and eyes: eye contact soft and steady, not a stare, not darting away · face warm and matching the client's tone · no flicker of shock or judgement at the hard moments · nods small and timed
  • Posture and space: body turned toward the client, or at a comfortable angle · arms and legs uncrossed · a slight lean when the material gets heavy · nothing between you
  • Voice: calm and warm · slower and quieter when the client is upset · pauses allowed to stand
  • Presence and habits: no pen-clicking, foot-tapping, clock-checking · phone silent and out of sight · comfort offered through voice and posture, not touch

The verbal seventeen: with one example eachसत्र शाब्दिक सीप, एक-एक उदाहरणसहित

Nine of these seventeen are worked in full, with steps, phrases and the mistakes to avoid: the five reflecting skills on page 19, the four change skills on page 20. The other eight live only in this table.

Practice drill

Client says: "Since my husband went to Qatar I don't sleep, my chest burns, and my mother-in-law says I am pretending." Write one open question, one paraphrase, one reflection of feeling, one reflection of meaning, and one gentle challenge: then check each against the table.

Attending उपस्थिति posture, eyes, silence बसाइ, आँखा, मौनता opens the door ढोका खोल्छ Reflecting प्रतिबिम्बन feeling first, then content पहिले भावना, अनि विषय "you sound exhausted" «तपाईं थाकेको सुनिन्छ» Questioning प्रश्न open, one at a time खुला, एकपटकमा एउटा "what happened next?" Summarising सारांश gather, check, hand back जम्मा गर्ने, जाँच्ने, फर्काउने "so far I hear three things" «अहिलेसम्म तीन कुरा सुनें» Challenging चुनौती gently, from trust कोमलतापूर्वक, विश्वासबाट "fine? your hands say no" «ठीकै? Each step rests on the one before it: no challenge without a relationship, no question before a reflection has shown you heard. The verbal seventeen all sit on these five.
The micro-skills ladder. The two highlighted steps, attending and reflecting, carry most of a session; questioning comes third on purpose. Beginners reverse the order and interrogate.
Key points
  1. Skills, not knowledge, are what the client experiences; 99 of the 780 course hours are spent here.
  2. Non-verbal attending (posture, eye contact, silence) opens the door; verbal skills (reflecting, paraphrasing, open questions, summarising) do the work.
  3. Reflect feeling before content; the client should hear their own words come back warmer and clearer.
